Laughology

I was surprised how sad 
this documentary about laughter seemed. 
Oftentimes making me want to cry, 
rather than laugh. 

The writer, director, and narrator 
Albert Nerenberg lost his ability to laugh. 

But then he and his wife feel startled 
to hear their baby daughter laugh. 
She didn’t learn such behavior from either of them, 
because they both suffered tragedy 
and allowed such sorrowful events 
to steal their ability to laugh. 

This engaging documentary, 
which studies what makes us laugh, 
traces Nerenberg’s efforts to get his laugh back! 

He studies laughter yoga, 
visits the man with the world’s most contagious laugh, 
holy laughter, 
and much more. 

The bittersweet journey resounds with laughter. 
Intriguing and educational film. 

Especially for me, 
because of my interest in what makes people laugh! 

Ultimately, this is a film of triumph, 
as he sees others who face harrowing circumstances 
revive themselves with the power of laughter! 

So I found it worthwhile to watch. 
I hope you enjoy it too. 

The DVD received only 4 reviews on Amazon, 
but all 4 were 5-Star Reviews! 
So clearly others enjoyed this as well.

You know, a lot of people come to me and they say, 
“Steve, how can you be so %@&#ing funny?” 
There’s a secret to it, it’s no big deal. 
Before I go out, I put a slice of bologna in each of my shoes. 
So when I'm on stage, I feel funny. 

Brian Regan: 
I learned something in the juice isle, and that is, 
I don’t know what’s going on with cranberries, 
but they’re getting in all the other juices. 
Whoever the salesman for cranberries does a great job. 
He’s showing up everywhere. 
“Hey what do you got? Apples? 
Well let’s put some cranberries in them; 
we’ll call it cran-apple - go fifty fifty. 
What do you got? Grapes? What about cran-grape? 
What do you got? Mangos? Cran-mango! 
What do you got? Pork chops? Cran-chops!” 

Dean Burkey: 
My mouth was dry, 
but I needed to lick some stickers 
to affix them in my niece’s storybook. 
So I committed a series of heinous crimes. 
And then when I got captured and brought to justice, 
I collected the saliva of the victims’ families 
and other protesters who spat at me on my way to trial. 
In retrospect, 
I suppose daubing tap water would’ve been easier. 

Mitch Hedberg: 
I miss the $2 bill, ‘cause I can break a two. 
$20, no. $10, no. $5, maybe, $2? 
Oh yeah. What do you need, a one and another one?

Woody Allen: 
I was thrown out of NYU. 
On my metaphysics final, they caught me cheating. 
I looked within the soul of the boy sitting next to me.

Some videos are funny and offensive at the same time!
Which makes them guilty pleasures. 

I used to enjoy Andrew Dice Clay's humor long ago, 
before he became just offensive 
and stopped being funny. 

I don't know if I'd like Sarah Silverman as much, 
if she wasn't so incredibly cute!
But she says horrendous, 
yet somehow hilarious, 
comments too. 
While having coffee with Jerry Seinfeld, 
she mentioned the following video, 
so I watched it: 

Lots of rough language, but I think most, if not all, of it got bleeped out. 

(But you still know what they're saying!)

Jamie Foxx Ruins A Not Funny Comedian

I felt guilty enjoying that so much, 
because I wouldn't want to get heckled like that, 
especially not by the emcee! 
But I read where Jamie warned that guy ahead of time 
that it would be a tough crowd; 
and Doug's reply was: 
"Yeah, whatever." 
So Jamie did what he had to do, 
to keep the show funny; 
and he made it hilarious! 

Another guilty pleasure 
is comedian Anthony Jeselnik!
He has such jokes as: 

Anthony Jeselnik: 
Whenever I meet a pretty girl, 
the first thing that I look for is intelligence. 
Because if she doesn't have that, 
then she's mine. 

That's one of the few I can quote.
Some I can't even tell close friends, 
because they'd never understand.
They might even feel hurt. 

His style is arrogant, vulgar, and offensive, 
but he looks charming and has a nice smile. 

Just like Sarah Silverman, 
maybe the comedy stems from the juxtaposition 
of someone who looks nice 
saying such horrid things; 
and then smiling. 

In his breakthrough comedy writing system 
Breaking Comedy's DNA, 
Jerry Corley calls this comedy trigger: 
Ambivalence.

Some of this is so horrifying, you might not like it.
Somehow this guy makes the horrifying hilarious!

I don't care if you think I'm racist. 
I just want you to think I'm thin.

Jerry Seinfeld:
Men and women will never understand each other; 
my advice is to just stop trying. 
Just forget it. 
I know I will never understand women. 
I will never understand how you can take boiling hot wax, 
pour it onto your upper thigh, 
rip the hair out by the root
...and still be afraid of a spider.

Jerry Corley:
I was trying to teach my five-year-old 
how to tie her shoes. 
She was like, "Dad! I can't Dad, I can't!" 
I said, "How many times have I told you 
not to use that word? ... I am not your Dad."

I’m an avid reader of books and an enthusiastic watcher of videos about how to create comedy. Always searching for the ever elusive secret to comedy. ‘Cause once I find it, I will rule the world. 

Yes, one day, you will all bow before me; and call me Skippy! 

Make that King Skippy. 

But don’t worry, I’ll be a benevolent ruler. Nothing like that other world leader we hear so much bad press about. 

Which reminds me, I need to adjust the A.C. 

Anyway, after I find the secret to comedy and use my newly-earned billions, make that trillions, and my surefire laugh-getting abilities to take over the planet, I’ll make sure the next big discoveries are supermodel clones and a tasty non-fat chocolate that gives everyone who eats it super powers! 

So really, my ruling the world will be a win-win-win for everyone! 

Cool deal? 

Okay, call my search for the secret to comedy a passion. 

Or an obsession. Whatever. 

But wanting to discover the secret to comedy; and having enjoyed Jerry Corley’s YouTube videos on how to write comedy, I thought: Where better to learn the intricacies of comedy and how to write jokes? Than from the Joke Doctor himself! The founder of the Stand Up Comedy Clinic: Jerry Corley!

So I had to get his book! And I’m glad I did too. I enjoyed it a lot! 

Jerry teaches more than the same old rehashed theories I found in other books on the same subject. He also provides practical methods for creating comedy too. 

When working for the Tonight Show, he used to write over 120 jokes a day, which was why he developed some of the methods he shares in his book. 

[I wrote over 100 jokes one day, but those were mostly Tom Swifties. {See my previous posts: The Easiest Jokes to Write! (Part 2) and Swifties.} Tom Swifties are fun, sometimes funny, but usually not hilarious. Fortunately, the joke-writing techniques this book teaches far exceed the limitations of mere Tom Swifties.] 

Jerry teaches not only in an informative manner, but in a fun and humorous way too. Joking as he writes about writing jokes. 

If you want to learn how to write jokes, this book will teach you that and more. 

I give the book 5 out of 5 stars! 

The only thing that I thought was strange; (and I may have had an earlier version of the book), is: 

Why would a guy who can write well over 100 jokes a day use some of the same joke examples more than once? 

Jerry?!
