A Dean Reads Book Review: Breaking Comedy's DNA

A Dean Reads
Book Review!
Of Jerry Corley's
"Breaking Comedy's DNA"

Reviewed

I’m an avid reader of books and an enthusiastic watcher of videos about how to create comedy. Always searching for the ever elusive secret to comedy. ‘Cause once I find it, I will rule the world.

Yes, one day, you will all bow before me; and call me Skippy!

Make that King Skippy.

But don’t worry, I’ll be a benevolent ruler. Nothing like that other world leader we hear so much bad press about.

Which reminds me, I need to adjust the A.C.

Anyway, after I find the secret to comedy and use my newly-earned billions, make that trillions, and my surefire laugh-getting abilities to take over the planet, I’ll make sure the next big discoveries are supermodel clones and a tasty non-fat chocolate that gives everyone who eats it super powers!

So really, my ruling the world will be a win-win-win for everyone!

Cool deal?

Okay, call my search for the secret to comedy a passion.

Or an obsession. Whatever.

But wanting to discover the secret to comedy; and having enjoyed Jerry Corley’s YouTube videos on how to write comedy, I thought: Where better to learn the intricacies of comedy and how to write jokes? Than from the Joke Doctor himself! The founder of the Stand Up Comedy Clinic: Jerry Corley!

So I had to get his book! And I’m glad I did too. I enjoyed it a lot!

Jerry teaches more than the same old rehashed theories I found in other books on the same subject. He also provides practical methods for creating comedy too.

When working for the Tonight Show, he used to write over 120 jokes a day, which was why he developed some of the methods he shares in his book.

[I wrote over 100 jokes one day, but those were mostly Tom Swifties. {See my previous posts: The Easiest Jokes to Write! (Part 2) and Swifties.} Tom Swifties are fun, sometimes funny, but usually not hilarious. Fortunately, the joke-writing techniques this book teaches far exceed the limitations of mere Tom Swifties.]

Jerry teaches not only in an informative manner, but in a fun and humorous way too. Joking as he writes about writing jokes.

If you want to learn how to write jokes, this book will teach you that and more.

I give the book 5 out of 5 stars!

The only thing that I thought was strange; (and I may have had an earlier version of the book), is:

Why would a guy who can write well over 100 jokes a day use some of the same joke examples more than once?

Jerry?!
What’s the deal man?

All the Best,

Please Note:
I was not paid to write this review.
I purchased my own copy of the book.
I make a commission off the sale of this book,
but I would not recommend it,
nor promote it, if I didnt like it.
Thank you,
Dean

[Losing my hair is] embarrassing sometimes.
Like this morning,
my wife was running her fingers through my hair.
But I already left for work.

There are several commercials on TV
featuring Dr. Robert Jarvik,
the inventor of the artificial heart.
I’m thinking “inventor?!”
My ex-wife has had an artificial heart for years!

A cop pulled me over the other day.
He said, “Do you know how fast you were going?”
I said, “You think at that speed,
I’d risk taking my eyes off the road
to check the speedometer?”

Happy Veteran's Day!

Happy Veterans Day!

Happy Veteran’s Day?

That doesnt sound right; does it?

Isn’t that like saying Happy Day of Atonement?

Or Happy Ash Wednesday?
Or even something along the lines of the freakish phrases: Fun Funeral, Delightful Death, or Appealing Apocalypse.

I feel sad that the world has wars (a.k.a. conflicts) and that we can’t just all get along.  The universe has more than enough resources, if only we would all just learn to trust and share.

But it’s like the Earth is a Mega-Giant Screen HD 3-D Plasma TV; and each country wants control of the remote.

Can’t we let each other take turns watching our favorite shows?

Or cant we build multiple monitors, metaphorically speaking, so everyone can enjoy the proverbial programming of his/her own choice all the time?

Apparently not.

At least, not yet.

So we do have wars (a.k.a. conflicts), which is why we need the brave people who help protect our way of life and our very lives, which is why I say:

Thank you to our veterans who served our country well; and thank you to our current military and other civil servants who daily risk their lives to protect us and help us live in peace.

And so, my friends, I hope that one day soon, we can all get along and work together, not only to create a wonderful world without war, but to create a wonderfully, wonderful world, where everyone can wear marshmallow life-jackets while paddling down a river of chocolate in a peanut butter raft with graham cracker oars, accompanied by his/her own favorite supermodel clone.

Blessings & Joy,

P. S. Please enjoy how British comedy troupe Monty Pythons Flying Circus presents a different kind of warfare in their sketch The Killer Joke:

Why I Should Be a Billionaire

What would I do with a billion dollars?

I'd become a superhero.

No billionaire is doing that!

No one is doing that.

At least, not to the degree of a billionaire.

The Viper calling the local police station at the first sign of danger doesn't count. (No offense to the Viper. Even he will admit billions of dollars would up the ante of his crime-fighting efforts. Maybe get him unlimited texting and data. But then again, he may have already retired. A change in phone plans may have foiled him.)

The Viper

The government should charge a hefty Non-Superhero Tax to billionaires who aren't superheroes, to fund folks who want to be superheroes, but can't afford the exorbitant costs of costuming and gadgetry.

Okay, sure. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and other billionaires fund foundations and make donations to help others. And thus, they save countless lives. But none of them do so while wearing Spandex!

No mask. No cape. Probably not even matching boots and a utility belt.

Okay, maybe a utility belt. But not a cool utility belt. Nothing with web fluid or bat ropes.

I'd have the obligatory Burkey Manor mansion/estate with the Dean-Poles hidden behind a secret revolving bookcase that would let me slide down to the Dean-Cave at a moment's notice.

I would also have the super-fast, fuel-efficient, nuclear-powered (if need be), bulletproof, bombproof, laser-firing, missile-launching (only when necessary), knockout gas-spraying Dean-Mobile.

What?
A quick tank with a mortar launcher would be better
than a slow Corolla with a slingshot.

And, of course, the Dean-Mobile would have patent leather seats. A mini fridge stocked with various forms of chocolate. And a spacious trunk for hauling evildoers to justice.

And maybe a built-in Blu-Ray player for when I get bored on stakeouts.

I'd also have the Dean-Plane, the Dean-Boat, the Dean-Submarine, and the Dean-Space Shuttle.

And maybe a nice hammock in the backyard for my days off.

With the extra billions I'd make from Burkey Enterprises and Dean-Man merchandising rights, I'd produce family-friendly sitcoms and hilarious movies to bring clean comedy to the world. Make a hundred billion dollars to end famine in Africa. And create a delicious chocolate candy that cures cancer. Or at the very least alleviates hunger pangs.

I'm fully aware that wealth is a super power in and of itself. I also understand that "with great power comes great responsibility," as Stan Lee stated in Amazing Fantasy # 15. That's why, besides becoming a superhero to inspire the masses, creating clean comedy to entertain the world, ending disease with chocolate, and eradicating global famine, I'd do what every billionaire should do. I mean, this should be the whole point of becoming a billionaire! (Besides the aforementioned benefits to mankind.) ...

Create supermodel clones!

Once I've accomplished all that, I'd want to hurry home to my trophy wife Colbie Caillat, so we can make beautiful music together. ;o)

** What?
Any woman who sings "I Do"
obviously wants to marry a superhero.
That's just common sense.

And then we can retire on a remote private island where the beaches are made of pancakes; and the ocean waves are maple syrup.

Blessings & Joy,
