Once a week she would kill a chicken
in front of my photograph."

I told him I'd scatter his ashes at Neiman Marcus.
That way, I'd visit him every day."

Can We Talk? Remembering Joan Rivers

Can We Talk?
Remembering Joan Rivers

I never met Joan Rivers, so I suppose it's silly for me to "remember" her. But I what I do recollect about her is that she pushed forward in her life, not letting the tragedies that plagued her along the way stop her. She was a real force of nature. You knew you were famous, if Joan Rivers insulted you. Sadly, I never had the privilege. Fortunately though, I have more than enough people in my life to insult me. Especially when I drive during rush hour without my glasses.

Her death makes me think of that Dodge car commercial she did earlier this year, where, at the end, she drops the microphone and bolts away in a hurry, leaving us with a bunch of feedback.

So here we are staring at the proverbial microphone on the empty red carpet, with feedback screaming in our ears, wishing she could come back on the red carpet one more time to tell us another joke.

I read that Joan Rivers was kind, generous, and loving with those around her. Which reminds me of some movie, probably a made-for-TV movie, I saw decades ago where the insult comedian went to Heaven, because, although he made a living insulting people, he really cared about others, even those he insulted; and he was generous and charitable in his personal life.

Clearly, we suffer a great loss as Joan Rivers was a highly talented performer and a truly one-of-a-kind person. She was so unique, in fact, that I think that with her insulting so many people in her lifetime, she wants to be the one insulted for a change, even in death. Although not a fan of insult comedy myself, nor a big practitioner thereof, I hereby honor such an odd request:

They say only the good die young;
Joan Rivers died at age eighty-one.

To which I'm sure she'd respond:
"Thank you so much!"

Only her way of saying thanks would be:
"Listen Blogger Boy,
I've stepped in dog $#%&
that was funnier than you."

To which I'd reply:
"Aw, you're so sweet."

Only my way of saying that would be
crying into my pillow all night.

And obviously,
I mean crying into my pillow all night
in a macho, manly way.

Rest In Peace Joan Rivers.
Now you can crack jokes
about the puffy bright clouds
and the never-ending harp music.

I imagine her barging into
The Throne Room of God,
or pounding on God's bathroom door,
and saying:

"Look Big Guy,
I'm sure You're busy,
what with You still trying
to make sense of the platypus,
reality TV,
and Snuggies for Pets;
but can we talk?
Now don't get me wrong,
pearls are great,
but don't You have gates
with other jewels?
What's wrong with diamonds?
Oh God,
I love diamonds!
You call this Heaven?!
How the H*ll can I rest in peace
with that angelic choir of Yours
singing praises at all hours of the night?
And where's the chocolate cake
that won't make me fat?"

Can we talk?
I wish we could.

Some of My Favorite Mitch Hedberg Jokes

In memory of Mitch Hedburg
who died eight years ago this week,
(on either March 29 or 30, 2005)
I'm reposting my most popular post

Mitch Hedberg's final Just for Laughs
performance from 2004.
One of the best, known for his hilarious one liners.

Mitch Hedberg:

I like to play blackjack.
I’m not addicted to gambling.
I'm addicted to sittin’ in a semicircle.

I ate one anchovy;
and that is why I did not eat two anchovies.

A fly was very close to being called a land,
because that’s what it does half the time.

If a drink was ice cold, it would be impossible to drink.
Because it would be solid.
“Here’s a drink, Mitch; it's ice cold.”
“I guess I could lick it.”

Fettuccini Alfredo is macaroni and cheese for adults.

I used to be a hot-tar roofer.
Yeah, I remember that day.

I opened up a yogurt.
Underneath the lid it said, “Please try again.”
Because they were having a contest that I was unaware of.
I thought maybe I opened the yogurt wrong.
Or maybe Yoplait was trying to inspire me.
“Come on Mitchell, don’t give up!”
An inspirational message from your friends at Yoplait.
Fruit on the bottom, hope on top.

I had a job interview at an insurance company once;
and the lady said,
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”
I said, “Celebrating the fifth year anniversary
of you asking me this question!”

You know when a company wants to use letters
in their phone number, but often they’ll use too many letters?
“Call 1-800-I-Really-Enjoy-Brand-New-Carpeting.”
Too many letters, man, must I dial them all?
“Hello? Hold on, man, I’m only on ‘Enjoy’.
How did you know I was calling?
You’re good, I can see why they hired you!”

I had the cab driver drive me here backwards;
and the dude owed me $27.50.

An escalator can never break.
It can only become stairs.
You would never see
an “Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order” sign,
just “Escalator Temporarily Stairs.
Sorry for the convenience.”

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that’s the problem.
It’s not the photographer’s fault.
Bigfoot is blurry; and that’s extra scary to me.
There’s a large out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.
“Look out, he’s fuzzy! Let’s get out of here!”

I’m against picketing,
but I don’t know how to show it.

This shirt is “dry clean only”
... which means it’s dirty.

My Favorite Mitch Hedberg Routine

In memory of Mitch Hedburg
who died eight years ago this week,
(on either March 29 or 30, 2005),
I'm reposting my fourth most popular post
from My Favorite Blog:

(February 24, 1968 – March 30, 2005)

You know when you
go into a restaurant on the weekends;
it gets busy; so they start a waiting list;
they start calling out names?
They say like, “Dufrene, party of two.
Table ready for  Dufrene, party of two.”
And if no one answers,
they’ll say the name again,
“Dufrene, party of two.”
But then if no one answers,
they’ll just go right on to the next name,
“Bush, party of three.”
Yeah, but what happened to the Dufrenes?
No one seems to care!
Who can eat at a time like this?
People are missing! You people are selfish.
The  Dufrenes are in someone’s trunk right now.
With duct tape over their mouth.
And they’re hungry!
That’s a double whammy!
We need help! “Bush, search party of three!”
You can eat once you find the  Dufrenes!

Seven years ago today,
Mitch Hedberg passed away.

Although I'd never heard of him
until over a year after he died,
he's one of my favorite comedians

Please Note:
He used a lot of profanity in his live shows,
so your best bet for hilarious clean comedy
is to catch his TV performances.

As funny and inspiring as he was,
I fear we lost him before he reached his prime.

Life is too short to bicker.
Better to snort* and snicker.

Blessings & Joy,
