Old Multiple Band Radio On White Background

I was driving home last night, feeling all alone, when the radio played “Home” by Phillip Phillips.

The song said, “Know you’re not alone.” And that encouraged me.

As if the Cosmic Force that holds the universe together took the time to offer me some reassurance.

Of course, it’s not an exact science.

Another time when I drove home, feeling all alone, the radio played, “Who Let the Dogs Out?”

He's Got the Whole World in His Hands

He’s Got the Whole World
in His Hands

Whenever people sing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”, especially when everyone’s clapping, I like to say: “Heres hoping He doesnt clap along.”

After the Fall, when Eve started to nag, did Adam ask God, “Dear Lord, can I have my rib back?”

Or maybe: “I’ve got another rib I can spare, what else You got?

Is that where we get the phrase: “Spare ribs”?

And poor Eve.  She was stuck with Adam.  With no one else around, she couldnt explore any other options.

Flawed as he was though, he was still better than a flea-ridden orangutan.

If only for lack of Febreze and breath mints.

It’s not like she needed him to move a piano or change a tire.

While Adam’s gardening all day, Eve stays home and plays Suzie Cavemaker.

And this was long before handy dandy vacuum cleaners and Easy Bake Ovens.

Adam was no picnic either.  He’d come home from a hard day of tilling the ground and gripe about whatever Eve prepared.  Apple Fritters again?!”

Eve would roll her eyes and sigh, upset that he hadn’t noticed her new fig-leaf apron.  “Oh sure, now you wont eat the apple!

Book Review: Jackson Baer’s What the H-ll

Book Review:
Jackson Baer
What the H-ll

The book description found at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005X2VI1U reads as follows:

Book Description

 October 11, 2011
What if everything you've been taught about Hell was wrong?

Many Christians think that Jesus is the only way to Heaven and those who

don't believe in Him will spend eternity in a literal and burning Hell.

Is this what the Bible teaches? Will the majority of mankind spend

eternity in torment because they rejected God in this life?

"What the Hell" will show you what the Scriptures clearly teach about this subject
and where this idea of Hell came from. It's not about winning or losing
or even changing the Christian faith. It's about the honest pursuit of
truth.

That description intrigued me, so I had to read this book. Plus, it was FREE on Amazon Kindle yesterday, so that made me buy it! (Looks like it’s still FREE at the time of this blog posting, so hurry! Before the price goes back up.)

My struggle with Christianity has always centered around H-ll, not Heaven, The Other H Place. Made no sense to me. No matter how many times well-meaning people and others tried to explain it.

If a place of eternal torment exists, why do Christian people have children? Why risk your own progeny falling away and suffering in agony forever?

How are we supposed to praise God for “saving” us, while others we know didn’t or wont make it? How can we be sure whether or not we have enough faith? And does our loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ really want us to believe in Him only so we can avoid burning in eternal torment?

Surely, Jesus wants us to believe in Him, because of Who He Is and because of His great acts of love and mercy, not simply so we can acquire “Fire Insurance”.

To reinforce what I had already hoped was true, this book points out how the notion of The Other H Place doesn’t exist in the original text of the Bible; and only came into being around the fifth century and later. So thank you Jackson Baer for that!

My only problem with “The Other H Place” not existing, is, in my mind, that rid us of the need for Jesus. Which didn’t feel right either. There are too many fulfilled prophecies and other historical facts to support Jesus.

Jackson Baer points out that although there isn’t an eternal place of punishment, there will still be punishment meted out for those who reject Christ in this life. And such punishment will feel like an eternity for those who suffer it. So we still need Jesus! And we still need to share The Good News of Christ’s victory over sin, death, and the Devil with the whole world.

I enjoyed the book and recommend this to both believers and nonbelievers as the author spoke to the heart of many of my concerns. He shows from Scripture, that is from properly translated Scripture, what The Bible actually says.

I have a greater appreciation for God knowing that His love and mercy truly endures forever.

Such teachings do not line up with my LCMS upbringing, but like Martin Luther said, “Unless I am convinced by Scripture and by plain reason ... Here I stand. I can do no other.”

Blessings & Joy,

Why Do Good Things Happen to Bad People?

Why Do Good Things
Happen to Bad People?

Photo Source: The 20 Century Fox Harold Ramis movie: Bedazzled

Ecclesiastes 7:15 (CEV):
“I have seen everything during this senseless life of mine.
I have seen good citizens die for doing the right thing,
and I have seen criminals live to a ripe old age.”

Why do good things happen to bad people?

The devil gets his kicks out of making the righteous jealous of the wicked. Plus, how else could he string along bad people, if he didn’t make good things happen to them?

In the end though, when justice is meted out, the wicked will suffer for their wrongs. As indeed will the devil.

What Satan doesn’t realize, is that he could confound the entire universe a lot more by repenting and being nice.

That would blow everything out of the water!

God would have to forgive the devil!

Once the devil finds forgiveness, how then could everyone else not?

But instead, the devil figures he’s confined to eternal torment in Hell anyway, so he lures as many others as he can to join him.

Of course, Satan can never repent, because the pride that got him to rebel against God in the first place, is the same pride that prevents from admitting he’s wrong.

The poor devil.

The Day Undying Love Died

“The Day Undying Love Died”

YouTube video uploaded by  on Apr 7, 2009
(Footage from The Gospel of John)

Today we remember the sacrificial death of The Righteous One who suffered, bled, and died for our unrighteousness.

We can never be good enough on our own to fulfill God's requirement for perfection, because none of us are perfect.

We can't make up for our misdeeds by trying to do better, not even by performing more and more good deeds.

One misdeed makes us imperfect. Just one. We each have much more than one each and every day.

God is holy and just, so sin must be punished.  If God fails to punish sin, His holiness is compromised.  Justice must be upheld.

And yet, God is love and wants to have fellowship with mankind.

In order to reconcile His holiness with His love, God punished Jesus His Only Begotten Son for the sins of the world, so that all who repent and believe in Him will receive forgiveness and everlasting life.

Jesus paid a debt we could never pay.

Nails didn’t hold  Jesus to the cross;
His undying love for us held Him there.

Betrayed, forsaken, beaten, tortured, flogged, and crucified.

As horrifying, tragic, and graphic as the violence done to Christ was, His love is even greater.

An eternal love powerful enough to conquer death.

Love strong enough to forgive the worst of sinners who turn to Him for His saving grace.

Love able to comfort and sustain us, to draw us to Him, to grant us faith, hope, and salvation.

Love that takes us from the sorrow of our Savior’s death to the joy of His resurrection.

Love died to pay for our sins and save us and rose from the dead to assure our hearts of His forgiveness and eternal presence.

Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and the Life; and no one comes to The Father, except through Him. May the love of Christ bring you to true repentance, faith, and everlasting joy.

In  Jesus’ name. Amen.

Blessings & Joy,
